Mono Basin Historical Society

A local history group in Lee Vining that runs the Mono Basin History Museum in the old Mono Lake schoolhouse, at the south end of Hess Park. Inside, artifacts, furniture, maps, equipment and photographs tell the story of the Kootzaduka’a Paiutes, gold mining, homesteads and ranches, schools, resorts and the town of Lee Vining. Outdoor exhibits include farming and mining equipment and the Upside-Down House, which visitors can peek into through the windows. The museum is open in the warmer months, and the outdoor exhibits can be visited any time. The society also holds local history presentations and member meetings at the Mono Lake Indian and Lee Vining Community Center. It is a good fit for families, visitors and anyone curious about the Mono Basin’s past. It also takes part in community events around town, such as the Lee Vining Centennial Dinner with Music at the Mono Inn.
