Cerro Gordo

Cerro Gordo is a restored 1860s silver mining ghost town at roughly 8,200 feet in the Inyo Mountains, reached by a narrow dirt road climbing 4,600 vertical feet out of Keeler on the east side of Owens Valley. At its peak, Cerro Gordo supplied roughly half the silver and lead produced in California and helped fund the early economy of Los Angeles. The town emptied out by the 1930s and sat largely abandoned for decades until new ownership began restoration work in 2018. Today the site hosts guided tours, overnight stays, and a handful of annual events including the Cerro Gordo Silver Run — and is slowly being rebuilt as a destination for anyone drawn to Eastern Sierra history.
