The Happy Boulders are a popular bouldering area on the south edge of the Volcanic Tablelands, accessed via Chalk Bluff Road north of Bishop. The boulders sit in a canyon cut into the Bishop Tuff — a layer of volcanic rock deposited roughly 760,000 years ago by a massive eruption of the Long Valley Caldera. The climbing features sharp pockets, crimps, and varied movement on volcanic tuff, with over 500 boulder problems ranging from beginner-friendly to V11. The canyon is open and sunny, making it a good option on cold or windy days. The area is managed by the BLM and is accessed from either Five Bridges Road off Highway 6 or from Pleasant Valley Dam Road off Highway 395. A BLM campground (The Pit) on the Tablelands nearby is a popular base for climbers.
