A section of the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve on Highway 120 East, about 5 miles east of US-395 near Lee Vining. It is known for its tufa towers, the calcium-carbonate spires and knobs that form where freshwater springs meet the lake’s alkaline water. The reserve also protects the lake surface, the wetlands and the habitat of the birds that feed and rest at Mono Lake. Visitors can hike, walk the trails, watch wildlife, picnic and take in the views. Restrooms, drinking water, parking and interpretive exhibits are available. Guided tours of the tufa are held here. Dogs are allowed in most areas, but not on the State Reserve Boardwalk or at the County Park. Drones are not permitted over the lake or its shoreline without a special permit. The road is not plowed in winter.
