Science on Tap 2026: Nutcrackers and Nighttime Warming @ Distant Brewing

September 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Join the Whitebark Institute for the final Science on Tap 2026 event featuring Hugh D. Safford, Ph.D., Vegetation and Fire Ecologist from the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at UC Davis. Dr. Safford will present “Nutcrackers and nighttime warming: unexpected treeline dynamics in the southern Sierra Nevada,” exploring how Clark’s Nutcrackers — which can cache up to 98,000 pine seeds in a single season — and the subalpine forests they depend on are responding to shifting climate dynamics in the Sierra Nevada. Grab a brew, bring a friend, and learn how alpine and subalpine ecosystems are adapting to nighttime warming and other changing mountain conditions. Presented by the Whitebark Institute with funding from Edison International and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection through the California Climate Investments Program.
