Manzanar Baseball Project

A sport-meets-art initiative produced by the nonprofit Great Leap, in partnership with Manzanar National Historic Site along Highway 395 in the Owens Valley. The project restored the historic baseball diamond at Manzanar—where over 10,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II—and stages exhibition doubleheaders on the field featuring players from California’s Japanese American baseball leagues in custom 1940s uniforms and vintage equipment. The games are immersive, site-specific events accompanied by cultural performing arts and live-streamed internationally. Field restoration work, including a 22-foot announcer booth, was completed through volunteer labor. The project also presents public programs, panel discussions, and film screenings at venues across California to share this chapter of Japanese American history.
