Horseshoe Lake Trailhead

A trailhead at the end of Lake Mary Road in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, in Inyo National Forest. It is the staging point for the Horseshoe Lake Loop and the Mammoth Pass Trail. The site has a large parking area with spaces for equestrian trailers, bathrooms, trailhead maps and local information. The town trolley runs here in summer and carries bike trailers for easy shuttling. The mammoth Crest and the southern flank of Mammoth Mountain rise behind it, and more than 100 acres of dead trees mark where carbon dioxide seeped up from cooling magma. In dry years the lake shrinks over the summer and leaves wide sandy beaches. Outdoors and nature events happen here, including guided nature walks at the trailhead and the Annual Lakes Basin Cleanup.
